New in Spell Catcher X 10.1 - For Everyone
These new features are available on both Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) and 10.3 (Panther).
-
Easier Installation
You no longer have to run an installer. Simply copy the new Spell Catcher application into your hard drive (most users will place it in the Applications folder), then launch it. You will be prompted to install or update the input method component (used for Interactive checking). If you install the input method, Spell Catcher will ask you to log out or restart your computer.
An uninstaller utility is now included, useful for upgrading and re-installing as well as removing and archiving various pieced of a Spell Catcher X installation.
-
Update Checking
Spell Catcher now has the ability to scan the internet for updates & additional languages.
-
More Menu Entries
A number of items have been added to the input method's menu (checkmark), the Dock menu, and Spell Catcher submenu in the Services menu. These additions make Spell Catcher easier to use.
-
Input Menu
A number changes have been made to the Input menu, making it more intuitive and easier to use.
-
A Modify Selection submenu has been added, giving you access to your user-created macros and the Modify Selection modules.
-
A Set Keyboard submenu has been added, making it possible to change keyboard layouts on the fly, without having to then choose Spell Catcher from the Input Menu again. This is particularly useful for those who use different keyboard layouts for different tasks.
-
A 'Check Word' command has been added, for checking one or two word selection. This is much faster than using Check Selection for this purpose.
-
A 'Check All' command has been added, so you can quickly check your entire document (eliminating the need for you to select all of the text, then use Check Selection).
-
The Input menu has been re-organized with a more logical layout.
-
The current error and error type are also displayed in the menu.
-
The Dock Menu
Check All, Modify Selection, and New Shorthand commands have been added to the Dock menu.
-
Updates and Languages
Staying up-to-date has never been easier. Choose Get Updates and Languages from the Spell Catcher application menu, and Spell Catcher will check (via the internet) to see if there are updates or additional language plug-ins available.
-
New Preferences
A General preference pane has been added to Spell Catcher's preferences, allowing you to configure the following items:
-
Specify whether Spell Catcher becomes the active application when opened.
-
Choose the font and size that Spell Catcher should use for various windows and lists.
-
Specify whether Spell Catcher should use alternating row colors when displaying lists.
-
Shorthand Expansions
There are several new features related to Shorthands:
-
You can now preview your shorthand items. Open the Preview Drawer by clicking the Preview button in Spell Catcher's toolbar, or by choosing the Show Preview Drawer item in the View menu when Spell Catcher is the active application.
-
Expansions are now much more flexible, using the rules for each language to add applicable prefixes or suffixes when performing an expansion. For example the shorthand "bcs" -> "Bob C Smith" will expand the text "bcs's" into "Bob C Smith's". With the French language active, the expansion "esp" -> "espagne" will expand "l'esp" into "l'espagne" or "qu'esp" into "qu'espagne".
-
Shorthand are now even easier to create. A 'New Shorthand' entry has been added to both the Dock menu, and Spell Catcher's entry in the Services menu. To use it, simply select some text & choose the menu item - a new shorthand which expands into the selected text will be created.
-
Expansions have been enhanced. Tab and return characters in shorthand expansions are now always sent to the active application as control/movement keystrokes. This means that an expansion can tab between fields in a spreadsheet or database, and that typing return to trigger a shorthand in something like iChat's messaging or chat window will make the expansion, and the return will activate the default button (or perform whatever the default action is).
-
Improved Find in References
Find in References now finds more and better matches, shows the expansion for matching shorthands, and will apply language-specific rules to isolate the infix portion of a word when looking for matches.
-
Importing Files
Spell Catcher can now directly import all types of Spell Catcher Plus (for Microsoft Windows) references, and can import TypeIt4Me files into your Shorthand Glossary documents.
-
Enhanced Compatibility
Better compatibility for Mulberry email client, Excel v.X, Eudora 5.2, AppleWorks 6.x, most web browsers, and applications that aren't TSM-aware.
-
The Input Method Tuner
Often it's possible to make a few “tweaks” to the way Spell Catcher's input method behaves with a particular application to make it compatible or improve compatibility. Use the Get Updates and Languages item from the Spell Catcher application menu, to check for and download these files. After downloading a new tuner, copy it to your Application Support/Spell Catcher folder. You do not need to log out or restart for it to take effect.
-
Better Behavior
Several changes make Spell Catcher even more well-behaved than before:
-
Spell Catcher has significant speed increases in many areas.
-
Spell Catcher now uses less memory - only half of what it previously used, in some cases.
-
Spell Catcher now has less of an impact on typing performance, especially on Panther.
-
Other Changes
-
Spelling suggestions are improved. Suggestions for run-together words are sorted into the list of suggestions, instead of being grouped separately at the top or bottom of the list.
-
Spell Catcher now has smoother integration with the OS X spelling panel.
-
Spell Catcher's Services support has been re-implemented so that it works much better with the ever-increasing number of Carbon applications that support the Services menu.
-
Interactive checking can handle input from sources other than the keyboard. You can use the Character Palette to insert hard-to-type characters into your document, and Spell Catcher X will properly “see” them as if they were typed.
-
The language used during interactive checking is more tightly coupled to the language used for Check Selection, Look Up, and Check Word commands in the Input menu.
-
Shorthand abbreviations can contain leading and trailing punctuation (non-alphanumeric) characters.
-
The Language pane in the Preferences window has been re-designed and more accurately reflects the real default language that is used.
-
Spell Catcher's input method can more accurately determine whether there is actually a document active that you can really type text into.
-
The Suggest Spelling window now remembers its position reliably, and on a per-application basis.
-
There is a new preference in the Spelling tab on the Interactive pane, that can (in most Cocoa applications) automatically open the Suggest Spelling window in close proximity to the actual error word in the document.
-
Improved UI
The User Interface (UI) has several improvements:
-
Instead of simply truncating text which is too long for a given field, Spell Catcher will now add an ellipses in the middle of the text. Characters are removed from the middle of the text, to fit it into the field.
-
File icons (see the References pane in Spell Catcher's preferences) are now drawn with their Finder label color.
-
Licensing
You can now enter multiple licenses. You can also specify whether the license is for the current user only, or all users on the machine.
New in Spell Catcher X 10.1 - For Mac OS X Panther Users
These new features are specifically designed for new technologies only available on Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther).
-
Auto-Complete Text
Now supports Cocoa text completion in Panther (OS X 10.3 or later). To enable this feature, you will need to choose a Spell Catcher dictionary in the spelling panel, as detailed below:
-
Launch an application which supports the spelling panel, such as TextEdit.
-
From the Edit menu, choose the Spelling submenu.
-
In the Spelling submenu, choose the 'Spelling...' item.
-
In the resulting window, choose a Spell Catcher item in the Dictionary pop-up menu.
-
Close the spelling panel.
-
Enter some text, such as text which will trigger an expansion.
-
Type the keystroke which triggers text completion (<F5> or <Option>+<Esc>).
-
A list of words should be displayed on your screen, choose one to instantly insert it into your document.
-
Spell Catcher can provide completions from sources other than just word lists, including people and companies in your Address Book, Shorthand Glossary expansions, and Thesaurus Synonyms.
-
Panther Look
Spell Catcher X 10.1 adopts the new look of most Panther controls, including highlighted toolbar items, the new Help button, alternating background colors and grid lines for tables and outlines, and more.
